I am walking softly these days,
drifting slow in my dreams
I know that change is coming
with spring approaching,
traveling back east lies ahead
because of something very exciting that is
and I am noticing the nature around me more and more,
trying to relax into my days, embrace my dreams.
Days at work are fast pace and anxious,
so I find it more and more important
to fall into my art.
With my latest two encaustic paintings,
I tried to photograph my steps.
These two began a landscapes,
then I masked out the rectangular shapes,
and added several layers of beeswax.
You can see the yellowish color,
and how you can partially see through it.
Then I wrote some words on tissue paper,
and decided this wing was going to be my focal point.
It is affixed to a piece of muslin with matte medium.
I inserted the paper into the wax
and added more blue to the sky.
I used a straight edge to keep my lines smooth.
And I attached the fabric and wing
into the wax with wire.
Underneath the words barely showed,
and
I love to add a book feeling to my paintings,
with something hiding,
So as you lift up the muslin
with the collaged wing,
I attatched the little frame
and inserted new words...
on pale wings...
As I wait for spring
and the river lands where I live is still brown,
I imagine a butterfly wing
drifting across a field,
promising that color will return.
On Pale Wings
10" x 6 1/2"
encaustic painting and assemblage

More gorgeous work, I love the idea of adding the book to the painting. We are heading into our autumn with cooler nights but still mild days, so nature here is starting to slow down. I'm so glad you liked the earrings.

love your pale and quiet wing
and your sharing of process
discovered a snow drop yesterday
and then the snows returned today
your inclusion of season is rich and palpable
so warm and quietly lovely here...
thank you so for your visit
sending spring thoughts your way,

Interesting to see your process Roxanne and I love the name you have chosen for the piece and that you added the book to it. I am longing for Autumn, just as you are longing for Spring :-)

Such lyrical words and a beautiful piece of art. Fascinating to hear and see more about your process. Encaustics is a bit of a mystery to me -- and I actually like that! Looking forward to finally meeting you!

What a gorgeous post Roxanne. Love your poetic prose along with your beautiful artistic treat of letting us take a walk through your encaustic process. The butterfly wing is so gentle and touching-along with the concept of a book- always carrying a special meaning! Can't wait for us to meet! What an exciting day that will be!!

This is very interesting. I'm intrigued by the sheets of beeswax. I've only seen it in sold in huge chunks that I break off and melt. Thank you for showing us your process. I love the opaque dreaminess of your art.

Love what u r doing with the wax--and hiding little word messages, too. Intimate.
The brown will lift. Past days the river held thousands of little black and white ducks of a sort bobbing up and down on the currents. They remind me of rubber duckies, the way they flow with the water; and each other, making a line then a curve, circling about, flitting. They could be flowers warmed and flying across to other places. To You, perhaps.
Enjoy your trip East. Thanks for your lovely note .

Roxanne, I can completely imagine you floating through your world and creating magical things around what you see. So poetic and beautiful.
I really enjoyed seeing your process. Encaustics are the crayons of adulthood. You can play with them forever.
CAn't wait to meet you!
